UP remote villages to get solar power

In an attempt to provide electricity to houses in remote and inaccessible areas of the state where electrification is not possible due to difficult geographical terrain, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) will soon be providing off-grid electricity by setting up solar power plants.

According to officials at the UPPCL, the task to identify the areas that are inaccessible and have not yet been brought under the corporation’s power grid has been handed over to Non-conventional Energy Development Agency (NEDA). The solar electrification includes providing every BPL family residing in the remote areas will be given 300Wp capacity solar power pack battery along with a ceiling fan, five LED bulbs and one power plug free of cost.

Speaking with TOI, UPPCL executive engineer PA Moga said, “The government’s aim is to increase the standard of living of the people in the remote areas that lack infrastructure for electrification. There are certain places where electrification is not feasible as these are separated by some water bodies such as rivers or canals. Therefore, the UP government is now planning to provide solar energy to the houses in such areas. Solar power will offer an opportunity to bridge this infrastructure gap and improve the standard of living of the people.”

Moga added, “Providing solar energy to these villages will substantially reduce health hazards by enabling the replacement of kerosene lamps.”

Officials said small solar grids will be set up in the identified remote areas, which will cover one or more villages as per the requirement of load. Every house will be connected with it. “Work for identification of the number of inaccessible areas in the state is with NEDA. Based on the areas identified, the budget for the scheme will be estimated and the requirement will be sent to the government. The cost of providing solar power connections to urban poor and other families is yet to be decided,” Moga added.

In addition, work on electrifying as many as 1.54 crore rural and three lakh urban households across UP under Centre’s Saubhagya Yojana is underway. The ‘electricity for all’ scheme of the government is aimed at providing power connections to each and every household by December 2018. In December 2017, UPPCL provided power connections to 4,389 families in Bareilly division under the Saubhagya scheme.
