Pollution-free city my aim: Mayor

BJP leader Asha Sharma was sworn in as the sixth mayor of Ghaziabad on Tuesday, along with 100 councillors of the municipal corporation. Divisional commissioner, Meerut, Dr Prabhat Kumar, administered the oath of office to Sharma (58), who was elected mayor after securing nearly 50% of the total votes polled in the municipal elections held on November 26.

After being sworn in, she said her primary focus would be on making a clean and pollution-free city. "Supply of clean and potable drinking water to the trans-Hindon part of the city would be one of my priorities. During campaigning, I have seen how water supply shortage continues to be a major problem in trans-Hindon areas. My focus will be to work as a servant of the people," said Sharma.

After she was elected, Sharma had been campaigning extensively in Gujarat along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the assembly elections. In a tweet last week, Modi had praised Sharma for the win, which she secured by defeating her nearest rival by a huge margin of over 1.63 lakh votes.

Shortly after being sworn in on Tuesday, Sharma briefly outlined her vision for the development of Ghaziabad.
